8 TV Shows to Watch In July: 'Sharp Objects With Amy Adams & More

The lean, mean season of summer is upon us and the television pickings are mighty slim. However, for those of us old enough to remember the days of summertime re-runs, even having one or two (or eight, like we do) new quality series to pass the time with is a luxury. Luckily, quality over quantity prevails, and there are some gems to enjoy this month while chilling by the pool.  Check out July’s top television premieres:

Synopsis: James “Ghost” St. Patrick, a wealthy New York nightclub owner who has it all, catering to the city’s elite and dreaming big, lives a double life as a drug kingpin.
What You Need To Know: The most popular show on the network (apparently), it may shock you to learn that “Power” starring Lela Loren and Omari Hardwick is now entering its fifth season. However, fans will be pleased for the return of the series following the fourth season cliffhanger as the characters Ghost, Tommy and Kannan come together against a common enemy. Fun to note, though it seems very much a show about men, the show’s showrunner, Courtney Kemp is a black woman and notably one of the most 50 powerful showrunners on TV according to a recent feature from THR.
Release Date: July 1 on Starz

Anne With an E
Synopsis: Young orphan Anne Shirley learns to navigate her new life on Prince Edward Island with the Cuthberts of Green Gables.
What You Need To Know: Anne Shirley (Amybeth McNulty), one of literature’s most beloved female literary heroines and (Canada’s most famous Maritimer), is back.  The second season of Moira Walley-Beckett’s (“Breaking Bad”) adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s beloved classic Anne of Green Gables, expands beyond the book and delves deeper into the lives of the inhabitants of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island – one feels as though we never left the side of our fast-talking, red-headed kindred spirit.
Release Date: July 6 on Netflix

Synopsis: Reporter Camille Preaker returns to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls; Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims while trying to solve a psychological puzzle from her past.
What You Need To Know: We don’t need much convincing to watch just about anything Amy Adams stars in. One of our greatest and most versatile talents working today, she continues to impress with every new outing and “Sharp Objects” is a perfect vehicle for her to show off all of her strengths. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée who is coming off of a successful run with last years “Big Little Lies” and based on the novel by “Gone Girl’sGillian Flynn, “Sharp Objects” may be the first drama to fully deliver this season on HBo following a number of misfires.
