January is kicking the 2025 media landscape off strong with some intriguing new series and even more exciting returns. Apple TV+ solidifies itself as the major player with the return of the critically acclaimed “Severance” and the workplace comedy series “Mythic Quest.” Elsewhere, there’s premieres from iconic directors, wickedly funny mockumentary series, dramas based on real-life tragedies, and yet another Western ready to dominate the discourse.

“Lockerbie”
Colin Firth stars as a man looking for justice in “Lockerbie.” Based on the 2021 novel “The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice,” this based on true events tale follows Firth as Jim Swire whose daughter died in the 1988 bombing of the Pam Am Flight 103. Otto Bathurst (“Peaky Blinders”) and Jim Loach direct.

“Cunk on Earth”
The wonderfully bizarre “Cunk on Earth” returns for its second season on Netflix. Diane Morgan stars in this mockumentary series as Philomean Cunk, an ill-informed investigative reporter who travels all over the world in order to examine life and our existence, interviewing real-world experts (who may or may not be in on the joke) in her crusade for knowledge.
Release Date: Season 2 premiered January 3rd on Netflix.
“Asura”
Prolific filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda returns to television with the Netflix Japanese drama series, “Asura.” Rie Miyazawa, Machiko Ono, Yu Aoi, and Suzu Hirose star in this reimagining of “Like Asura.” The series follows four sisters during the 1970s as they learn of their father’s affair.

“American Primeval”
Director Peter Berg and star Taylor Kitsch reunite for the upcoming Western miniseries, “American Primeval.” The series follows a mother and son who are fleeing from their past while enduring the hardships in the American West. Betty Gilpin, Kim Coates, Jai Courtney, Shea Whigham, Dane DeHaan, and Saura Lightfoot-Leon also star.

“The Pitt”
The medical procedural is back with the Max series “The Pitt.” The series, starring Noah Wyle, follows the realistic challenges healthcare workers face in America, set in a hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Created by R. Scott Gemmill, Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, and more star.

“Severance”
The hit series “Severance” returns for its second season on Apple TV+. Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro, and Patricia Arquette all return with Ben Stiller returning to direct five episodes. The series picks up after the events of the Season 1 finale, where Mark realized that his wife is alive and working for Lumon.

“The Couple Next Door”
Eleanor Tomlinson, Sam Heughan, Alfred Enoch, Hugh Dennis, and Jessica De Gouw star in the psychological thriller series, “The Couple Next Door.” Directed by David Allison and based on the Dutch series “Nieuwe Buren,” the series follows a young couple who, after moving and befriending their neighbors, find their relationships fray due to unexpected drama.

“Paradise”
Sterling K. Brown and “This is Us” creator Dan Fogelman reunite for their latest Hulu series, “Paradise.” The series follows a security team tasked with protecting a former president. Julianne Nicholson, James Marsden, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, and more star.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres January 28 on Hulu.
“Mythic Quest”
The underrated comedy “Mythic Quest” returns for Season 4 two years following the finale of its third season. Created by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz, the series continues to follow the workings of video game studio owner Ian Grimm, the intelligent but awkward Poppy (Charlotte Nicado,) and the rest of their ragtag group of employees. David Hornsby, Danny Pudi, Ashly Burch, Imani Hakim, Jessie Ennis, and Naomi Ekperigin also star.
