This June will see Universal release a live-action version of their popular DreamWorks Animation franchise, “How To Train Your Dragon,” the first attempt to mimic what Disney has been doing with their animation library with visionary Canadian filmmaker Dean DeBlois (“Lilo & Stitch”) returning to write and direct. The studio shelled out big bucks to have a new trailer air during this Sunday’s Super Bowl game and highlights the spectacle of the fantasy world that is an adaptation of Cressida Cowell’s New York Times bestselling book series.
We’ll see Scottish actor Gerard Butler (“Den of Thieves 2: Pantera”) back in the role of Chief Stoick The Vast from the original run of animated movies alongside new additions like Mason Thames (“The Black Phone”), Nico Parker (“The Last of Us”), Nick Frost (“Skeleton Crew,” “Shaun of The Dead”), Julian Dennison (“Deadpool 2”), Gabriel Howell (“Bodies”), Bronwyn James (“Wicked”), Harry Trevaldwyn (“Smothered”), Ruth Codd (“The Midnight Club”), Peter Serafinowicz (“Guardians of The Galaxy”), and Murray McArthur (“Game of Thrones”).

Universal’s logline for their live-action reimagining reads as follows:
“On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (Nico Parker) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.”
Of course, fans of other DreamWorks Animation properties will certainly be curious if the studio will have the stones to attempt more “live-action” remakes based on their other hit franchises like “Shrek,” “Kung Fu Panda,” and “Trolls.” However, that will likely hinge on how well this installment does at the worldwide box office and turning a decent profit, as doing these animated characters/stories practically is such an expensive undertaking.
“How To Train Your Dragon” will debut in theaters on June 13, and you can watch that new trailer below via Universal.
