'The Five-Year Engagement' EP Shows Off Love For Van Morrison & Pedro Almodóvar Films

nullAlright, you hopefully read our Tribeca Film Festival review of Nicholas Stoller's "The Five Year Engagement" this morning. We hear that It's a sweet and funny comedy that veers off in tangents, but fortunately, it never loses its way.

Hot on its heels comes the info of the accompanying soundtrack EP, a brief five-song set with some interesting and comical connections. For music-heads that like their swooning, bittersweet and soulful pop songs comes the reveal of a few Van Morrison songs: "Crazy Love," performed by Audra Mae, another cover of "Into The Mystic" done by The Swell Season (the musical duo from the film "Once") and "When The Evening Sun Goes Down" by Brett Dennen. We hear there's a least one actual Van Morrison song featured in the film as well.

Rather hilariously (and this writer assumes this is a minor comedic spoiler so watch out), the opening track is actor Chris Pratt singing "Cucurrucucu Paloma," the absolutely heartbreaking Caetano Veloso tune performed by the Brazilian musician in Pedro Almodóvar's devastating dramedy classic, "Talk To Her" (that scene which you can see below always gives us chills). Personally, for this writer that's worth the price of a ticket alone and I have to see this for myself.

Lastly, the soundtrack features one instrumental track by Michael Andrews, a man who has arguably and quietly surpassed Jon Brion as the go-to guy for indie-comedy soundtracks (and partly because Brion is rather inactive and super choosy). Generally still undersung, Andrews' score for "Jeff Who Lives At Home" is easily high on our list for best scores of the year so far, his original music to "Cyrus" was equally bouyant, winsome and dulcetly sweet and the "Funny People" score was another knock out of the park (and so much so that he's become the go-to in-house Apatow composer also scoring "Bridesmaids" and who knows what else to come). He's also got two score classics under his belt, including "Me And You And Everyone We Know" and "Donnie Darko" (he also co-performs that films now-classic "Mad World" Tears For Fears cover).

Available for digital download now via Back Lot Music, "The Five Year Engagement" stars Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, and Rhys Ifans and hits theaters on April 27. Tracklist and an an audio sampler below.
