Got a Tip?

Sylvester McCoy Confirms He Is In Talks To Join ‘The Hobbit,’ But Not As Bilbo Baggins

One of the biggest stories of the summer, has been the stalled production of “The Hobbit” and as the season comes to a close with no firm answers as to whether or not the financially crippled MGM will find a way to get the film into production, things seemed to be looking grim.

But according to actor Sylvester McCoy, probably best known to American audiences for his role on the 1980s version of “Doctor Who,” he is in talks to join “The Hobbit” in an unspecified “wizard” role. He told the Dunoon Observer/Argyllshire Standard (via TheOneRing), “I am being cast in ‘The Hobbit’. We’re currently in negotiations – there are two of us under consideration. It’s not the Bilbo role, but could be bigger.”

McCoy was previously rumored to be joining the film as Bilbo Baggins, but with his latest revelation, TheOneRing speculates the role he might be filling may be that of Radagast the Brown (the other major wizard role being Gandalf which will be played by the presumably returning Ian McKellen).

So does this mean a happy ending for “The Hobbit”? Maybe. Peter Jackson did hint last week at some positive news about the film coming very soon, and he has been quietly meeting with actors for the films. Without an official greenlight, the project remains halted but it certainly appears that Jackson is getting his pieces in place as much as possible so that if the switch is indeed flipped, things can move very quickly.
