We were just thinking about this in the a.m. around The Playlist water cooler.
Will a decision on “The Hobbit” be handed down soon? Today would-be director Peter Jackson gave a glint of hope in an interview with the Dominion Post in New Zealand.
Jackson said that Warner Bros. is “making progress untangling the MGM situation, so we should have certainty with The Hobbit sometime soon.” Does the whole Spyglass possibly coming in to take over and run MGM, make things easier? One would assume. Does this mean Spyglass would be unloading rights back to WB?
Who knows, but the filmmaker sounds optimistic. The paper says, “[Jackson] is also confident that there should soon be certainty about whether he would direct The Hobbit movie, which would allow him to map out a five-year plan for projects ‘that will keep many people very busy.’ “
With two films, and a long shoot and post-production process, five years sounds about right for the “The Hobbit” give or take a few years. Jackson probably also to hammer out a deal with WB that will probably even make him more stinking rich, but without him there’s likely no film. Well, at least not one that can be turned around with any expediency. Fingers crossed.
