Here’s a new look at Mia Wasikowska in Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre,” which is now evidently set for release sometime next year.
While a 2011 release always seemed on the card, we had hoped the film could sneak in by year’s end and shake up the award-season race — but it’s not to be.
The film stars Wasikowska (“Alice In Wonderland”) as the titular character and Michael Fassbender in the role of Rochester, in the classic Brontë tale of a young governess, Eyre, who falls in love with her employer, Rochester, but discovers he harbors a dark secret. Co-starring will be the stellar likes of Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins, Imogen Poots, Holliday Grainger and Tamsin Merchant.
There’s some serious talent at Fukunaga’s disposal for the BBC Films and Focus Features co-production which will reunite the “Sin Nombre” director with his cinematographer Adriano Goldman. Moira Buffini (“Tamara Drewe”) penned the adaptation which the filmmaker is hoping to differentiate from previous iterations by focusing on the novel’s darker, Gothic sensibilities that have rarely been explored. We seriously can’t wait.
Another Brontë adaptation, meanwhile, seems to be hitting a stumbling block with Andrea Arnold’s “Wuthering Heights” still without a leading man, despite shooting previously being scheduled for late-April to June. Brit thespian Kaya Scodelario is attached to star as Catherine Earnshaw opposite what the director hopes to be a 16 to 24 year old male of Gypsy appearance with a Yorkshire accent, a role evidently with casting difficulties.
Hopefully, the film will still front cameras soon though with Arnold’s self-described “astonishing vision of perverted passion and passionate perversity” definitely a project we’re highly anticipating.
