Call it a match made in comedy heaven. There is probably no better trio than Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone — aka The Lonely Island — to skewer the world of pop music. And they take that idea and run with it in the upcoming “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” which pokes fun superficial pop stars whose egos are as big as the arenas they fill.
Samberg leads the movie playing Conner4Real, a not so thinly veiled Justin Bieber type who’s a massive star, but has no self-awareness of his own pretensions, with nothing between his ears but vapid soundbites. Here’s the official synopsis:
Universal Pictures’ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.
Featuring a ridiculously massive supporting cast including Sarah Silverman, Imogen Poots, Bill Hader, Joanna Newsom, Maya Rudolph, Will Arnett and many, many more, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” opens on June 3rd.
