Carlos Reygada is definitely not a mainstream filmmaker. While his films are festival hits and have garnered the Mexican director critical acclaim, Reygada’s work is known for having a bit of a learning curve for viewers. However, once you understand how the filmmaker works, you’ll probably understand why many people consider his films masterpieces. And judging by the first trailer for his latest film, “Nuestro Tiempo (Our Time),” it doesn’t look like Reygada has changed much in the last six years.
Yes, the trailer for “Nuestro Tiempo” is in Spanish, but that doesn’t mean anything for non-Spanish speakers. Most of the 2 minutes is devoted to long, beautiful shots and very little dialogue. But the basics of the plot are definitely there as we meet the family at the center of the story and the way that a horse trainer comes between a married couple.
“Nuestro Tiempo” stars Reygadas, Natalia López, Eleazar Reygadas, Rut Reygadas, and Phil Burgers. The film is also going to be the longest by Reygadas, with a runtime that’s over a full hour longer than any of his other films, at 173 minutes.
The film is debuting in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Here’s the synopsis:
A family lives in the Mexican countryside raising fighting bulls. Esther is in charge of running the ranch, while her husband Juan, a world-renowned poet, raises and selects the beasts. When Esther becomes infatuated with a horse trainer named Phil, the couple struggles to stride through the emotional crisis.
