Where to begin with the upcoming film “St. Bernard Syndicate?” We could describe the film as an offbeat comedy about two men trying to get their dog breeding business off the ground in China. But honestly, that doesn’t even begin to describe the madness that is “St. Bernard Syndicate.” You really do have to watch the trailer for fully understand.
The trailer for “St. Bernard Syndicate” does describe the aforementioned synopsis but also includes all the intangibles that make this Danish mockumentary stand out. There are the two lead actors, Frederik Cilius and Rasmus Bruun, portraying the men attempting to get their dog breeding center up and running. And as you can see in the footage, they’re liable to make you cringe so bad (but in a good way!) that you want to crawl out of your seat in embarrassment. Then you have the direction from Mads Brügger, who utilizes his documentary (and satirical) style to great effect.
Overall, the film, which played at this year’s Fantasia Fest and Tribeca, looks to be a truly unique comedy, with a very particular point of view, that begs you to watch it. And even though the film has flown under the radar until now, “St. Bernard Syndicate” is now one of our early must-watch films of 2019.
“St. Bernard Syndicate” opens in theaters January 18 before hitting VOD on February 5, 2019.
