'Teen Spirit' Trailer: Elle Fanning Performs The Songs Of Robyn, Ellie Goulding, & More In New Musical Drama

2018 is the year of musical dramas. With films like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Star is Born,” and “Vox Lux” utilizing incredible tunes written by some of the best songwriters ever, this year has been a dream for those that enjoy a bit of pop music in their movies. And 2019 looks to be starting off with another entry in the subgenre with “Teen Spirit.”

In the new trailer for the upcoming musical drama, we meet a young girl named Violet (Elle Fanning), who is entering an “American Idol”-esque star-making competition. The trailer is heavy on the synthesizers and neon, as we see Fanning’s character go through all the trials and tribulations on her way to stardom. And yes, there’s plenty of music.

In a film that is built around the idea of pop stars and singing, you better have some strong songs to help carry the story. Thanks to the musical talents of Robyn, Ellie Goulding, Teagan & Sara, Annie Lennox, and Carly Rae Jepson (along with many, many more), “Teen Spirit” looks to have plenty of tunes that will get your blood pumping. And credit where credit’s due, Elle Fanning actually performs all these songs herself, similar to how Natalie Portman sang the Sia songs for “Vox Lux.”

Joining Fanning in the cast are Zlatko Buric, Agnieszka Grochowska, and Rebecca Hall.

“Teen Spirit” is scheduled to hit theaters April 5, 2019.

Here’s the synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Violet lives with her mother on a small farm on the Isle of Wight. Her days are spent doing chores, waiting tables, and attending secondary school, where she keeps to herself. But in her free time — spent alone in her room, in the fields with her beloved horse, or at an under-attended open-mic night — Violet surrenders to song. She’s a naturally gifted singer for whom pop stardom might not be mere fantasy.
