‘After Class’ Trailer: Justin Long Fails Miserably When Trying To Create A Safe Space

If you’ve been to a college campus over the past several years, you’ve likely heard the term “safe spaces” being used quite a bit. The term refers to areas that are said to be safe for students and people that aim to be accepted without fear of being ostracized or judged. And in the film, “After Class,” Justin Long is a professor that finds himself in a bad position after trying to establish one of these safe spaces.

As seen in the new trailer for “After Class,” a professor attempts to create a safe space in his classroom and begs a student to share an intimate detail about her life. After the student complains to the university, the professor is put on leave and eventually finds himself back in the arms of his odd family, as he must deal with the truth of having a sick grandmother.

Joining Justin Long in the cast are Fran Drescher, Richard Schiff, Camrus Johnson, Kate Berlant, Becky Ann Baker, Tyler Wladis, Lynn Cohen, Samrat Chakrabarti, Dana Eskelson, and Michael Godere. “After Class,” which was originally known as “Safe Spaces” when it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, is written and directed by Daniel Schechter. The filmmaker’s previous work includes “Goodbye Baby,” “Supporting Characters,” and “Life of Crime.”

“After Class” is set to arrive in select theaters and VOD on December 6.

Justin Long plays a New York college professor who aims for his classroom to be a safe space for students, but a lesson plan pushes students to share more than they wish, forcing him take a deeper look at whether safe spaces live up to their name. He escapes from the local college controversy to reconnect with his own unique family, who are navigating how to deal with the emotions of having an ailing grandmother.
