Today is May 4th. For many, it’s just a Monday where they will go about their business like any other Monday (at least as normal as anyone can be during the COVID-19 pandemic). But for “Star Wars” fans, today is May the 4th, aka “Star Wars Day.”
And in honor of the “holiday,” Disney has gone ahead and released a new retrospective video celebrating “Star Wars Day” by showing clips from the various films, TV series, and video games that make up the galaxy far, far away. If you’re not someone that is obsessed with all things “Star Wars,” the video isn’t likely to stoke any sort of emotional response. But for many, the edited clip will be enough to bring a tear to the eye, as the characters of George Lucas’ universe talk about hope.
In a more logistical sense, today also marks the debut of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” on Disney+. After its theatrical debut in December, it’s been a bit of a rough several months for JJ Abrams’ Skywalker Saga finale, but the film is finally available to stream for all those people that have been waiting with their Disney+ subscriptions. And the release of ‘Skywalker’ on Disney+ also marks the final film in Lucas’ Saga to be available on the streaming service. So, if you’re really a big “Star Wars” fan, you can spend all day going through all 9 films in the core series. (Don’t worry, we won’t hold it against you if you skip ‘Solo,’ but you really might want to add ‘Rogue One’ as #10, as it’s perhaps the best of the recent films.)
So, if May 4th holds a special meaning for you, check out the video below and kick off your “Star Wars Day” festivities. Otherwise, the video is a reminder that large corporations aren’t afraid to capitalize on made-up holidays for a quick buck.
