'Star Wars': 'Russian Doll's' Leslye Headland to Create A New Female-Centric Live-Action Series For Disney+

Disney+ is definitely making good on Bob Iger’s promise that the future of “Star Wars” is bright on the streaming platform. We already have seen the news that the streaming service has renewed “The Mandalorianfor a third season (months before Season 2 airs), as well as the promise of upcoming series such as “Obi-Wan” and “Cassian Andor.” Oh, and then there’s that mystery film that may or may not be Disney+ bound from JD Dillard. Well, now we can add another project to the list, with the news that Leslye Headland is working on a new live-action “Star Wars” series for the streaming service.

According to Variety, Headland, who is the co-creator and showrunner of the Netflix series, “Russian Doll,” has been hired to write and serve as the showrunner for a new Disney+ “Star Wars” series. The title and plot of the series are unknown, at this time (would you expect anything less from Lucasfilm?), but the report claims the show will be female-centric and exists “in a different part of the ‘Star Wars’ timeline than other projects.” Whatever that means.

Now, many people might assume this project could be the unannounced, but rumored, Ahsoka Tano series that is expected to spin-off from the second season of “The Mandalorian,” with Rosario Dawson reportedly playing the role of the former Jedi. However, considering the report claims Headland’s series will exist in another timeline than other projects, that makes it difficult for a ‘Mandalorian’ spin-off to qualify. That is, unless they attempt to tell a story with the character outside of when we see her in “The Mandalorian,” but that sounds like a stretch.

If it’s not the Ahsoka Tano series, many fans are already hoping that they’re possibly bringing the character, Chelli Lona Aphra, to live-action. Aphra was created in a recent run of “Darth Vader” comic books and quickly became a fan-favorite. She’s a human archeologist that was hired by Vader. Along with her two droids, she goes on various missions throughout the galaxy. She’s often described as the anti-Indiana Jones. We have yet to see the character debut in live-action, with most of her appearances being relegated to comic books. However, with her primary timeline being different than the other series, there is the possibility that Aphra could be the subject of the Disney+ series.

Obviously, with no title, no synopsis, and just the announcement that Headland is showrunning, the new “Star Wars” series is still in the early stages. But we’ll hopefully hear more definitive news about it soon.
