Johnny Depp has been seemingly blacklisted in Hollywood, after the very messy legal battle and domestic violence allegations lobbed against him from Amber Heard. But it appears the actor does have a safe haven at the San Sebastian Film Festival, where he is being honored this year. But that doesn’t mean Depp is happy with his current state of affairs. Not at all. He’s still taking every chance he can get to speak out against “injustice” that he feels he is being subjected to.
Speaking at a San Sebastian Film Festival press conference (via Deadline), where he is expected to be honored with the Donostia Award, Johnny Depp took the time to talk about what he perceives to be a great issue in the world today—cancel culture.
“It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgment based on what essentially amounts to polluted air,” Depp said. “It’s so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe. It takes one sentence and there’s no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. It’s not just me that this has happened to, it’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men. Children have suffered from various types of unpleasantries. Sadly at a certain point, they begin to think that it’s normal. Or that it’s them. When it’s not.”
He added, “It doesn’t matter if a judgment, per se, has taken some artistic license. When there’s an injustice, whether it’s against you or someone you love, or someone you believe in – stand up, don’t sit down. ‘Cause they need you.”
As mentioned, all of Depp’s grievances seem to stem from the legal battle that he has waged against a British media outlet after alleged details of a domestic violence altercation became public. You can hop over to Google to find out the nitty-gritty if you so choose. Either way, since then, we’ve seen reports of Depp losing work, most notably a starring role in the upcoming “Fantastic Beasts 3,” as well as seemingly any other mainstream Hollywood project.
But clearly, Depp isn’t interested in stepping out of the spotlight and letting everything run its course. So, it’s likely that we’ll see more comments along these lines whenever the actor has a platform to speak.
