UPDATE: The Spanish media are reporting that Gilliam was there searching for locations and additional finances last month and will now return in the fall to begin production on ‘Don Quixote.’
A fall start does sounds like a much more reasonable time frame for a project seemingly not yet locked in but, either way, things do seem to be coming together for Gilliam.
The outspoken director also took a stab at James Cameron’s “Avatar” arguing that he felt the “super-deformed style with large heads” of Pixar’s “Up” was “more credible than the expensive and photorealistic ‘Avatar.'”
ORIGINAL: It’s cryptic and sounds like it’s been pulled out of the pages of a movie script but screenwriter Tony Grisoni reports that Terry Gilliam may have found financing and a green light for a spring production on “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.”
“I ran into Terry the other day in London’s Oxford Street,” Grisoni recalls to DreadCentral. “He was strangely calm. I said I really hoped we’d get ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’ going this spring. He smiled in a reassuringly zen-like manner and said that ‘of course we would.’ Then he drifted away into the crowds. I think he may have found god. Or some money.”
Gilliam recently confirmed Robert Duvall for the titular role in ‘Quixote’ whilst adding that he had “another good actor involved and it’s the old money game that [he’s] running now.” Has Gilliam now managed to conjure up the required financing and studio backing? And who’s this other actor Gilliam has involved?
One thing’s for sure: Don’t expect Johnny Depp to miraculously appear — the director has already ruled him out and any major, A-grade names. At best, we’re guessing he’s got a talented name along the lines of Heath Ledger and Matt Damon before they were certified stars in the “Brothers Grimm” era.
