‘Superman: Legacy’: Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, In The Mix For Leads In James Gunn’s Superhero Film

Filmmaker James Gunn (“Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3“) is kicking-off his reimagined DC Comics cinematic universe with a reboot of the “Superman” franchise as the first big theatrical output from the newly formed DC Studios. While “Superman: Legacy” hopes to give audiences Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel, we’ve been anticipating the new casting for the reboot after it was announced that Henry Cavill would be stepping down as the main incarnation of the DC hero. There is now a rather large update on the casting process with a handful of names being listed as The Hollywood Reporter has learned some of those names in the mix to play the main roles in the reboot from Gunn.

One of the known names up for Clark Kent, aka, Superman is “Pearl” actor David Corenswet said to be a top contender alongside two other unnamed actors. I’m sure it wouldn’t be long before those other identities are revealed or more names are put forward soon. The report downplays the chances for rumored actor Jacob Elordi (“Euphoria“), who is said to have never been actually involved with the process pouring cold water on him landing the gig. British actors Tom Brittney and Andrew Richardson were also in the mix early on but THR doesn’t say where they currently stand in comparison to Corenswet.

Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel“) has auditioned for the Lois Lane part with contenders such as Emma Mackey (“Sex Education“), Phoebe Dynevor (“Bridgerton“), and Aussie actress Samara Weaving (“Babylon“) also vying to play the headstrong Daily Planet reporter. The outlet calling Brosnahan’s audition as “outstanding” but is making sure to point it’s unclear who is exactly advancing to screen testing stage.

Nicholas Hoult (“The Great“) is also up for Superman and he just lost out, not by much, to Robert Pattison for Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman” so he may be due for that big superhero role he’s come so close to getting. Hoult also played Beast in the more recent “X-Men” prequel films so he is obviously versed in this genre too. Don’t be surprised if he gets mentioned as a frontrunner.

“Superman: Legacy” is already in the prep stages with a set release date of July 11, 2025, and it’s expected to begin shooting in Atlanta next year.
