Vin Diesels Teases That Universal Wants To Split The Next & Final 'Fast And Furious' Movie Into Two Separate Films

There may be a little more gas left in the tank for the “Fast And Furious” franchise. Variety reports that Vin Diesel teased at the world premiere of “Fast X” in Rome that the new film may not be the penultimate one in the series. Instead, it may be the first of a three-movie climax, with the upcoming eleventh installment potentially splitting into two films.

What’s more, Diesel said this is all Universal Picture‘s idea. “Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter,” Diesel told the premiere’s red carpet host. “And after the studio saw this one, they said, ‘Could you make “Fast X” the finale, a trilogy?’” Fellow “Fast And Furious” actress Michelle Rodriguez then chimed in, “It’s three acts in any story.” But Diesel stayed coy about whether there will in fact be a twelfth “Fast And Furious” film. When the host asked if the actor was “confirming right now that we’re getting a third movie,” Diesel cut the interview off. “You’re gonna get me in trouble here,” he joked.

Universal hasn’t confirmed anything about making two more movie in the franchise, but Diesel could be telling the truth. Earlier this year, Rodriguez hinted to Vanity Fair that “Fast X” ends on a cliffhanger thanks to Jason Momoa‘s villain Dante Reyes, and that it plays directly into the franchise’s final film. But if plans for that movie prove too overstuffed, then why not split it into two?

“It is not really an ending, but it’s also like, ‘You can’t do this to us. We’re your die-hard fans, you can’t do this to us!’” Rodriguez told VF about where “Fast X” leaves the series. “You’re going to feel so cheated in a way, but then so gratified and excited about what’s to come. I can’t divulge more than that, but get ready for a shocker. After 23 years of shooting these things, it’s really tough at this stage to shock me, and they got me good.”

Universal already has Christina Hodson and Oren Uziel signed on to write the next “Fast And Furious” film, and Louis Leterrier returns to direct “Fast And Furious 11,” too. So if the studio indeed wants to stretch out the franchise’s saga for another movie, fans should expect to hear about it soon. Is a twelfth entry necessary? Absolutely not. But will it make a ton of money? Yup, and that’s what Universal really cares about.

In the mean time, “Fast X” hits theaters everywhere next Friday, May 19.
