Armie Hammer had one of the more interesting “canceling” experiences we’ve seen over the past several years. Much like some of the other powerful Hollywood figures who were called out for alleged abusive behavior, Hammer’s situation added accusations of cannibalism, of all things, to the list. It made for a ton of memes, needless to say. But since then, we haven’t heard from Hammer, as he attempts to pick up the pieces of his life. Apparently, he’s now ready to mount a bit of a comeback.
Speaking on the Painful Lessons podcast, Armie Hammer went into detail about what happened during his cancellation and where he plans on going next. He called the fallout of the accusations “an ego death, a career death.” He likened it to a “neutron bomb” going off in his life. That said, Hammer talked about what’s next, which is an original script he’s working on.
“Even though I’m not welcome in their sandbox, I just decided I’m going to make my own sandbox,” explained Hammer. “If you won’t let me play in yours, I’ll go play in mine. I’ve written a script with my buddy Jerry. We’re in the middle of trying to put that project together. I don’t want to go into the details of it right now but we have a script and it’s something that we’re passionate about and it’s something that I’m going to go do.
He continued, “I don’t know what the future of that is going to look like, I don’t know what the response of that is going to be, but those are things out of my control. I’m powerless over what peoples’ response to it is going to be, essentially. But I can go do something that I’m passionate about. Just because they tell me I can’t do it doesn’t mean that I have to listen.”
After teasing the script, Hammer went further into explaining the origins of it and why he wants to make it now. Basically, he and his friend wrote a script inspired by another film but also autobiographical in nature.
“Writing this script has been incredibly cathartic,” he said. “We took an original piece of source material that was then turned into a film that we looked at and said, ‘There’s a lot of parallels here, albeit some more subtle and some more overt.’ So we took that and made it much more autobiographical and adapted it so it would be something that is cathartic…This is ours. We can do whatever the fuck we want. We’re really proud of it.”
We’ll have to see what comes of his script. Writing a script is one thing. Getting it produced is a whole other can of worms. And considering he doesn’t hold much sway anymore in Hollywood, it’ll be interesting to see how he gets this production off the ground, or if anyone is willing to give him a second chance.
