Dakota Johnson Wants To Avoid “Toxic Sets” With Feature Directorial Debut, Dreams Of Playing A Psychopath & Doing An Action Film

Actress Dakota Johnson is going to be making her entry into the world of feature directing with a new untitled project that is written by her “Cha Cha Real Smooth” co-star Venessa Burghardt, and was recently talking up the project over the weekend at the 59th editon of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic which she refers to as “very small” that she hopes to get rolling on “soon.”

Alongside those new comments via The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson mentions that she wants to avoid “toxic sets” and has an ambition to play a “psychopath” along with doing an action flick.

“I think I will direct a feature, a very small one, hopefully soon. And it’s really close to my heart and very close to TeaTime. We’re making it with Vanessa Burghardt, who played my daughter in ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth.’ She’s an incredible autistic actress,” Johnson said of her upcoming film debut as a director…”I’ve always felt that I’m not ready to direct a feature. I don’t have the confidence. But with her, I feel very protective, and I know her very well, and I just won’t let anybody else do it.”

“I can’t waste time on toxic sets anymore,” Johnson said of her intent to create a welcoming production space for her cast and crew. “With producing, that’s one of the perks…Now, being a producer and developing my own films, I can choose all the people.”

“There are roles that I dream of playing. I would love to play a psychopath, would love to do an action film,” the actress said of future acting gigs.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Johnson ends up securing a meaty supporting role in Michael Mann‘s gestating “Heat 2” at Warner Bros. (Adam Driver and Austin Butler said to be up for roles) or something on that level down the line, where she can get that action movie fix. Given her working relations with A24, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine the actress being courted for a psychological thriller and getting her wish to play an unhinged character.

After starring in Celine Song‘s romantic flick “Materialists” earlier this year, the next project we’ll see Dakota Johnson in is Michael Showalter‘s (“The Big Sick,” “Search Party”) film “Verity,” co-starring with Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett.
