“Superman” flies onto screens this week, and last night, the first wave of online reactions were posted on social media, which have been mostly positive and should give James Gunn, alongside Warner Bros. and DC Studios, confidence that a general audience may embrace this new DCU reset.
The stakes couldn’t be higher for the DC Studios as Gunn and the studio are going to be behind a wave of new projects such as “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” “Clayface,” “Sgt. Rock” (still alive and kicking despite the exit of Luca Guadagnino), and the HBO series “Lanterns” expected to help usher in both Hal Jordan and John Stewart versions of Green Lantern heroes to the cinematic side. That said, there is an overwhelming sense that Gunn may have an audience-friendly hit on his hands alongside a solid amount of praise for lead actor David Corenswet, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the pic.

Check out some of those buzzy “Superman” reactions below:
#Superman made me so damn happy. The movie is loaded with exhilarating action set pieces and well-placed humor and levity, but the beating heart of the film is Superman’s humanity, and his insistence on doing good and making the world a better place. David Corenswet brings such… pic.twitter.com/cPAcPdxmQl

#Superman soars. It's a non-stop joyride, packed with humor, action, and emotion.

There's spectacle to spare, unbridled optimism, and a goofy unpredictability that ties everything together, even when there are a few minor issues. We've never seen DC like this, and it's great. pic.twitter.com/KM2EC0cddd
James Gunn’s #Superman is the perfect superhero movie and a terrific start for the new DC Studios. It’s big, bright, exciting, full of hope & it never loses its sense of wonder. Watching it felt like ripping open a comic book & feasting on its wild, chaotic imagination. Loved it!… pic.twitter.com/SfvZOAT1Mg

I really liked #Superman. It’s beautiful, hopeful, and reminds you why these stories matter. Just the absolute solid comic book movie I needed. pic.twitter.com/EegA50ABr9

#Superman absolutely soars! An awesome achievement & hopeful balm, honoring past iterations (cinema & comics) while cutting its own path. Corenswet has that heroic shimmer. Hoult is delightfully diabolical. Brosnahan brims w/ vim & vigor. Krypto’s adorbs. @Superman @warnerbros pic.twitter.com/8sS3FNFf8i

#Superman was maybe my most anticipated movie of the year, and it really blew me away.

James Gunn and his amazing cast & crew really got to the heart of what makes a good Superman story for me: it's hopeful, even when things seem hopeless.
I hope everyone else digs it too. pic.twitter.com/j6OdMw3o5K
James Gunn and the cast really bottled that classic #Superman magic in this film. As someone who grew up buried in DC Comics, this felt like watching my childhood leap off the page in real-time.

It’s for families, comic book nerds, & anyone who has ever loved a good dog story pic.twitter.com/fFGXTALJHs
#Superman is a triumph for the new DC Universe.

It’s a comic book brought to beautiful live-action life, brimming with hope & fulfillment. It actually elicited tears of joy from me.
It’s a Superman for everyone. David Corenswet was born for Superman & Clark Kent. Loved it. pic.twitter.com/ng2CrD2gh0
The rest of the cast features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor alongside the supporting lineup such as Edi Gathegi (“For All Mankind”), Anthony Carrigan (“Barry,” “Gotham”), Nathan Fillion (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “The Suicide Squad”), Isabela Merced (“Alien Romulus”), Skyler Gisondo (“Licorice Pizza,” “Booksmart”), Sara Sampaio (“At Midnight”), María Gabriela de Faría (“The Moodys”), Wendell Pierce (“Selma,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), Alan Tudyk (“Andor”), Pruitt Taylor Vince (“Bird Box”), Neva Howell (“Greedy People”), and more.
Meanwhile, Gunn has teased a follow-up to “Superman” that he is mulling over as another directorial effort for the DCU, but stopped short of explaining what that movie would look like and if it would be a “World’s Finest” attempt or something closer to a new iteration of “Justice League.” Also, Gunn has mentioned that they’re currently writing a new “Wonder Woman” film that could further suggest a plan to bring the DC Trinity back to the big screen, sooner rather than later.
Again, “Superman” arrives on July 11 and should be one of the more anticipated blockbusters of the year, despite Gunn stating that the movie doesn’t need to be a massive box office earner to be considered a success after the filmmaker downplayed claims it would need to make $700 million.
