Is Glen Powell‘s Hollywood stardom still ascendant or on the wane? After a couple of critical clunkers in “Chad Powers” and Edgar Wright‘s “The Running Man,” the actor’s rise to the status of A-List leading man isn’t as assured as it was in the wake of “Hit Man” and “Twisters.” But Powell has plenty of buzzy upcoming projects that could right his ship, including, THR reports, a new sci-fi film from “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail.
THR says Powell is in final talks to star in “Tesseract,” produced via Amazon MGM and their recently revived United Artists. Powell’s producing partner, Dan Cohen, is also attached, with the duo co-producing via their banner Barnstorm. Esmail also produces the feature via Esmail Corp with Chad Hamilton, as well as Nick Nesbitt.
As for plot details, those remain under wraps for now. However, Esmail is reportedly looking to cast two other roles soon, both for actresses, and is eyeing London and Hungary for shooting locations this summer.
Powell adds “Tesseract” to his running list of upcoming features, including a sci-fi thriller helmed by Barry Jenkins titled “The Natural Order,” a country music comedy Powell co-writes with Judd Apatow, and a Texas-set firefighter movie from Ron Howard. The actor’s next film, “How To Make A Killing,” hits theaters next month on February 20. Powell is currently shooting S2 of “Chad Powers,” which should premiere on Hulu later this year.
As for Esmail, he’s currently wrapping post-production on “Panic Carefully,” a thriller starring Julia Roberts, Elizabeth Olsen, Eddie Redmayne, and Joe Alwyn. That film should hit theaters sometime this year via Warner Bros. Other recent work for Esmail includes “Leave The World Behind,” his 2023 apocalypse thriller that starred Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Kevin Bacon.
Stay tuned for more details on “Tesseract,” which, if it stays on course to shoot this summer, should arrive in theaters in 2027.
