Yes, actor Glen Powell is indeed making a firefighter movie, but not the one the internet was expecting, as Ron Howard (“Solo: A Star Wars Story”) is set to direct the untitled project that comes from screenwriter Christina Hodson.
This news hails from The Hollywood Reporter, which clarified in their reporting that the movie from Amazon and MGM Studios, Imagine Entertainment, and Barnstorm is based on an “original pitch” from Hodson, as the Texas-set flick sees “disparate childhood friends who are now accomplished firefighters and face a deadly series of Texas fires while navigating their relationship.”

While initially reported as a possible “Backdraft” project (which was set in Chicago and rights are firmly owned by Universal Pictures as they released a sequel in 2019), or loosely connected to Howard’s film released back in 1991. However, Glenn Powell downplayed that talk when The Playlist spoke to the actor last summer.
“Yeah, that’s not really a thing. So, I’m not really sure,” he said.”I’m a fan of ‘Backdraft.’ I think ‘Backdraft’ is an incredible film. I’m a huge Kurt Russell fan, as well. I think it’s a world that’s ripe for exploration, but not in terms of me around it. That’s nothing I can really speak to it,” Powell told us when directly asked about those “Backdraft” rumblings.
Hodson has made a name for herself working on various high-profile studio genre projects such as “Bumblebee,” “Batgirl,” “The Flash,” “Birds of Prey,” and the upcoming “Fast X: Part 2.”
Meanwhile, Glenn Powell does have another remake on the horizon as he leads Edgar Wright’s new version of “The Running Man” that will be released by Paramount on November 7.
The Texan actor on the rise is also expected to make a return for a gestating “Top Gun 3,” teaming with funnyman filmmaker/producer Judd Apatow on an upcoming country music comedy at Universal, and was tapped by director Barry Jenkins and Universal for the sci-fi pic “The Natural Order.”
Ron Howard is widely known as a filmmaker who tends to gravitate toward meaty ensemble casts, which likely means that other high-profile actors are going to be courted for this untitled firefighter project opposite Powell.
