Alright, we’ve already reported that the heavily anticipated “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” film — an adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s video-game centric graphic novels — will have an August 6th, U.K. release date.
So the U.S. date can’t be far be behind and or will hit around that same time, yes? Yes, speaking to MTV about the special effects in the film and the picture in general, he confirmed an August date.
“Yeah, we have a cut, and we’re still tinkering with that. It’s a different thing doing a film with lots of effects in it; it’s like another stage to have production be going on during the edit, which is an ongoing thing. It’s like a painting, basically. There will probably come a point where the film will be essentially finished, apart from the effects, which will still be ongoing. But [our release date] is in August … so, we’re not rushing the effects or anything.”
A friend of Wright’s, Jason Reitman saw an early cut of the film and teased folks on Twitter when he said the film, “does what everyone our age has been dreaming about: achieves the first all encompassing film of the joystick generation.” And we have to admit that quote was pretty damn intriguing. Reitman also called the film a “game changer” and also mentioned “The Matrix” as a signifier.
Wright also mentioned “The Matrix” when discussing the movie with MTV, but also gave a shout out to one of our favorite TV shows of the past decade, and a show that got Judd Apatow to where he is today.
When I hired [cinematographer] Bill Pope to be DP — amongst his many films and TV shows he’s done [are] “Freaks and Geeks” and “The Matrix.” And I said to Bill: Imagine this film is equidistant between those two projects. Imagine the film is slap-bang in the middle of “Freaks and Geeks” and “The Matrix”
We must admit, if they pull off that tone it will capture the spirit of the graphic novel quite well and we’d be pleased as punch. August is a weird date as it’s usually late dumping ground season, but with the success of “Inglourious Basterds” during the same month last year, Universal is probably betting they can come up roses once again. It’ll be interesting to see if the blog world — who is pretty rabid for this film — will be as interested as the general filmgoer who know nothing about the comic. But if those special-effects are as wowing as people claim, they shouldn’t have a problem. Can’t wait for August and to see how this one turns out.
