Jason Reitman Raves Over 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World'

Twitter: filling up slow news days since 2009… Jason Reitman, helmer of “Juno” and “Up in the Air,” has one of the more entertaining Twitter filmmaker feeds, particularly when talking to his BFF, and another of our favorite rising auteurs, Edgar Wright. Jason Reitman was in London over the weekend, and was lucky enough to be shown 30 minutes of Wright’s next movie, the eagerly anticipated comic book adaptation “Scott Pilgrim Versus The World.” And he’s a pretty big fan… His Tweets read, in chronological order:

* In London, @edgarwright showed me 30 min of “Scott Pilgrim.” While sworn to secrecy (so much, surprised blood wasn’t demanded) I will say this:

* It is a game changer for Edgar and the genre. It moves the speed of light and carries more unadulterated joy than I’ve seen in recent cinema.

* SP does what everyone our age has been dreaming about: achieves the first all encompassing film of the joystick generation.

* I’m in awe of the sheer control in the filmmaking. It feels like a “Matrix” for love and how willing we are to fight for it.

* If I had a movie coming out next year, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near it. Hats off my friend. Can’t get it out of my head.

Like we said, Wright and Reitman are more or less brothers from other mothers, so we’re sure the latter has every reason to talk up his pal’s movie, but he also knows his shit, and the buzz around “Scott Pilgrim” gets better all the time: there are very few movies next year we’re looking forward to more. The cast looks more prescient by the day (when it was first announced, no one really had any idea who the likes of Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick and Johnny Simmons were, all of whom have had a pretty big year), and from what we’ve seen in the video blogs, and heard about the soundtrack, we’ve pretty jealous of Reitman right now.

Our biggest concern is that the script, which was being developed a few years back, doesn’t quite have the surprisingly heartbreaking quality of the last couple of entries in the series (although that was a first draft), but otherwise we can’t see wait to see it [ed. suit yourself, I thought that original script was kind of brilliant]. Maybe Edgar will let us have a look next time we’re in Soho… He’s just responded on Twitter, incidentally, saying “I am very touched by @jasonreitman‘s lovely comments about “Scott Pilgrim” thus far. In unrelated news, “UP IN THE AIR” ain’t too shabby.”
