There has been this feeling that we’re looking at a Marvel Cinematic Universe reset, and going by new quotes from the Russo Brothers are reinforcing that idea and is seemingly happening BEFORE “Avengers: Secret Wars,” as they’re calling “Avengers: Doomsday” part of a “Phase Zero,” which likely cements the idea that we might not see a continuation of various properties or characters in their current form (recastings and reboots could be very much part of that plan, so hold onto your butts) and may allow The Mutant Saga (likely starting with Jake Schreier‘s “X-Men” reboot and Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther 3“) to kick-off this new era of the MCU.
Joe Russo made these comments at the SXSW London on Tuesday (via The Hollywood Reporter), one-half of the sibling directing duo said they’re “back to phase zero” of the MCU with “Doomsday.” “That serial shifting and changing and surprising you and then reinventing itself and then shifting and changing and then surprising you, that’s exciting, and I think you’re going to see some shifting and changing [with ‘Doomsday’]. So, get ready for it. Look, we were with Rob [Downey Jr.] earlier today. We were both talking about this concept that we are back to phase zero. This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past.”

This talk of a franchise-wide reset could explain WHY the studio has been limiting announcements (suddenly “Blade” and other projects have been delayed) and really only adding new TV projects for Disney+ (“Daredevil: Born Again” Season 3, “VisionQuest,” and “Wonder Man” Season 2 on deck), as the film corner might be the one to get the major overhaul. What that ultimately looks like is a bit of a mystery with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” coming in July, studio head Kevin Feige could add more insight into that idea, and if that means something like “Black Panther 3” is a continuation or one of the first big reboots.
We’re also curious, considering that Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom, Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool, and “The Fantastic Four” cast are from different universes, will they carry over, while the Earth-616 group will not? Time will tell.
With that, we won’t have to wait too much longer for the next chapter in the MCU saga as “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to go head-to-head with Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune Part 3” on December 18. We are expected to learn much more about the movie (alongside the future of the franchises) during the San Diego Comic-Con next month and the D23 Expo.
