We believe in Ryan Gosling a lot. The kid has amazing acting chops and has all the potential to go on to be one of the greatest actors of his generation if he keeps on track. His scenes in “Half Nelson” opposite Anthony Mackie (another Titan in the waiting), were like watching a young Pacino and DeNiro face off and we think he’s rather amazing.
So it’s disconcerting to hear this news/rumor (hopefully specious and dubious) that he’s going to play the D.C. Comics character Green Lantern. We’re almost positive the story is total B.S.
According to Latino Review (wait, what do they know, both Gosling and Lantern aren’t hispanic!), their sources are hearing that Warner Bros. top pick is none other than kid Gosling (others apparenty under consideration included Seth Green, Justin Long, and David Boreanaz).
But the thing we love about stories like this. Even if this were true and WB was even considering their top choice, does Gosling even know? Has he even been reached out to yet? You see a lot of these stories on blogs and then people like MTV who get real interviews with actors ask the thespians about it and 9/10 times their reaction is, “yeah, I heard about that, but no one’s contacted me.”
Even if they do? Will Gosling take the role? We think it’s far too unserious and far too beneath him. He’s on track for a Leonardo DiCaprio-esque career at worst, (and a Brando-like one at best), so we don’t think he’s sully his almost impeccable track record thus far with a silly comic book role. Ok Christian Bale has obviously kept his rep intact with the rock-solid ‘Dark Knight’ which proved comic films can be taken seriously. But look at what Emile Hirsch did with “Speed Racer.” Thank god that movie came and went and the fall never came back on him cause that could have been a huge personal blemish and tarneshing career move. ‘Dark Knight’ is one thing – a guy in green tights floating around outer space as an appointed interstellar guardian with a ring that makes him fly and can create inanimate objects that’s major weakness is the color yellow?
Don’t do it Gosling. Take a pass here.
