'Aaron Hernandez: American Sports Story': Ryan Murphy & FX Team Up To Tell One Of The Most Infamous NFL Stories

Often, sporting events feature storylines, especially in the NFL. Sometimes it’s the highly anticipated debut of a quarterback. Maybe there was a huge contract signing that led to a player leaving for another team. But never has there been a story quite like Aaron Hernandez.

As seen in the trailer for “Aaron Hernandez: American Sports Story,” the series tells the story of Hernandez, an extremely talented football player who made it all the way to the NFL but could never shake off his demons. Eventually, he was convicted of murder and sent to prison, where he died tragically. Needless to say, there’s plenty of material to work with here.

The series stars Josh Andrés Rivera as Aaron Hernandez. He’s joined in the cast by Patrick Schwarzenegger, Lindsay Mendez, Jaylen Barron, Ean Castellanos, and Tammy Blanchard. Much like “American Crime Story,” this new series is produced by Ryan Murphy and his team. It’s one of about a million shows on TV with Murphy’s imprint on it. The series is created by Stu Zicherman.

The first installment of American Sports Story is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. from The Boston Globe and Wondery. The limited series charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide and their legacy in sports and American culture.
