Every year, film fans can watch a film and instantly think “Yep, this is definitely intended for a more mature audience,” which is code for “My grandma is going to love this!” In 2018, without a doubt, the top of that list is “Green Book.” And now, with the recent announcement of the nominees of AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards, it’s been confirmed.

Peter Farrelly’s cringe-fest about racial politics in the Deep South in the ‘60s features all the hallmarks of a great “grandparent film.” First, there are loveable actors that senior citizens will describe as “he’s that guy who was in that movie you love” (Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali). Then you have a serious topic taken in a more light-hearted matter (Racism can be funny!). And finally, a happy ending where the aforementioned serious topic is all tied up in a nice bow and your grandparents can leave the theater talking about how happy the ending is (Hooray! Racism was cured!).
But “Green Book,” while leading the number of nominations, isn’t the only film that the American Association of Retired Persons is honoring this year. “Roma” is also up there for Best Picture/Best Movie for Grownups because…reasons? Is it a really big hit for senior citizens? Not sure about that. Then you have “A Star is Born” (obviously), “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

The real headscratchers are down in the acting categories. Sandra Bullock got some senior citizen love for her role in “Bird Box” (perhaps your grandma is a big fan of the “Bird Box” Challenge?). Robert Redford (so dreamy) got a nom for Best Actor. Then you have Blythe Danner and Judi Dench, legends as they are, getting Best Supporting Actress noms for “What They Had” and “All is True,” respectively. Clearly, AARP is taking its demographics into consideration with some of these nominations, right?
All kidding aside, it is nice that “Private Life” is getting some love by at least one awards ceremony!
The AARP Movies for Grownups Awards will air on PBS on February 15.
