Grab your tissues, or don’t, but be prepared that you might need them when you stroll into the cinema to see Hannah Marks and Joey Power’s feature directorial debut with the seemingly incredible love story “After Everything.” In a similar fashion to “A Walk to Remember” and “The Fault in Our Stars,” “After Everything” is a love story about a young person with cancer that will pull at your heartstrings.
The story centers around Elliot, played by Jeremy Allen White, who lives carefree in NYC. He, unfortunately, meets the sensible Mia, played by Maika Monroe, and receives a damning diagnosis all in the same week. As their love blossoms amidst the chaos and they learn that the real test of their relationship is not in the illness, but in everything else.
White, while he has had an honest career, is best known for his role as Lip on “Shameless.” Lip is definitely the guy that Gallagher family that has tried to do the right thing at least for some of his life, even if his journey has been a rollercoaster. This role as Elliot, however, seems a little more innocent than the con-man role we are used to seeing him in. Which is quite interesting to us considering Monroe who stars in the film, also stars in “Hot Summer Nights,” out this summer, which sees co-star Timothee Chalamet take the opposite approach– leaving the good guy behind to turn into a badass.
Starring alongside White and Monroe are Hollywood favorites such as Marisa Tomei, Gina Gershon, Olivia Luccardi, Dean Winters, Joe Keery, and Sasha Lane.
“After Everything” which was originally titled “Shotgun,” premiered at this years SXSW film festival and was well-received. The film is available in select theaters and on demand on October 12th. Check out the trailer below.
