While he’s now 50 years old, former enfante terrible filmmaker Harmony Korine is still a little mischievous boy at heart. While he’s seemingly mellowed somewhat—and kinda stopped telling tall tales— unless his recent comments about potentially directing a Terrence Malick script is one of his fibs—he’s also not against doing wild experimental sh*t. Some of the wild things he’s done lately utilize the American rapper Travis Scott. Scott starred in “Circus Maximus,” a musical/album companion film he directed, along with segments helmed by Korine, Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn, and more. In addition, Scott also stars in “Aggro Dr1ft,” Korine’s latest feature, which makes its world premiere in Venice this week.

Shot entirely in infrared photography, which makes it look trippy and scary af, “Aggro Dr1ft” follows an assassin on a mission to kill a demonic crime lord. Featuring Scott and Spanish actor Jordi Mollà, the film is only 80 minutes long and shot entirely using thermal night vision lenses by cinematographer Arnaud Potier. American DJ and producer AraabMuzik composed the film’s score.
Here’s the official synopsis from Venice:
In the seedy domain of Miami’s criminal underbelly, a seasoned hitman embarks on the relentless pursuit of his next target. Shot entirely through thermal lens, he navigates a twisted world where violence and madness reign supreme. Tensions unravel, leading to a psychedelic journey that blurs the lines between predator and prey.
Here’s Korine’s director’s statement from Venice:
Wild days, wild nights. Wasn’t wanting to make a movie. Was wanting to make what comes after movies. Was wanting to be inside the world. More like a video game. But who’s playing who. GAMECORE. Edglrd. Something new on the horizon. Life is good. Without it we’d be dead. AGGRO DR1FT. In between worlds. Locked and loaded. An ode to the aggressive drifter.
In a recent interview, Korine suggested that maybe the film is “not even a movie,” and from what we can surmise, maybe it’s some kind of surreal, creepy tone poem instead.
“Aggro Dr1ft” currently has no official U.S. distributor, but that may soon change when the film debuts at the Venice Film Festival this week. Check out the brief psychedelic teaser below.
