Alex Ross Perry Teams With Pavement & Actress Sophie Thatcher For 'Harness Your Hopes' Music Video

Maybe it’s the pandemic screwing with the perceived passing of time, but it does feel like it was only recently that filmmaker Alex Ross Perry released the musical drama “Her Smell.” But actually, that was nearly four years ago, way back in the pre-COVID era of 2018. Since then, the filmmaker hasn’t released any new films or TV shows (he had a kid, that’ll do it), but he has stayed busy directing music videos, like the newest one for the ’90s indie-rock band Pavement.

Not only is the music video for “Harness Your Hopes” from Pavement directed by Perry, but the clip also stars one of the breakout actresses of the last year, Sophie Thatcher. You may remember Thatcher from her starring role in the acclaimed hit drama series, “Yellowjackets.” Or if you’re a “Star Wars” fan, you’ll remember her from her appearance in the series “The Book of Boba Fett.” And now, she’s front and center in the visually unique clip for “Harness Your Hopes.”

For those not super familiar with Perry’s work, you shouldn’t be too surprised the filmmaker is doing some music videos. His most recent feature, “Her Smell,” delved deep into the world of ’90s grrrl rock and punk. So, it’s safe to say that the filmmaker has an interest in music. But before that, he’s was most famous for his indie features such as “Listen Up Phillip,” “Queen of Earth,” and “Golden Exits.” Pavement, of course, is a famous ’90s indie band, and this single isn’t even new; it’s a beloved B-side ahead of the release of their massive Terror Twilight album reissue coming April 9.

As for what feature Perry has up next, he was most recently attached to an adaptation of the Stephen King novel, “The Dark Half.” However, since that film was announced in 2019, we have yet to hear any news about it. In the meantime, you’ll just have to watch his new Pavement video for your Alex Ross Perry fix.
