In Ryan Lacen‘s first solo directing effort, Barerra stars as Chama, a single mom in New Mexico whose addiction issues may force her to give up custody of her daughter. “Sleeping” also stars Jackie CruzKristen GutoskieLuis BordonadaValentina HerreraLisandra TenaCory Scott Allen, and Alma Sisneros.

Lacen pens the film’s script on top of directing. In an interview with Deadline, Lacen revealed the film takes inspiration from the lives of seven women afflicted by addiction and his own personal experience. “This film is not only based on the lived experiences of seven women with a history of addiction, it was made by them,” Lacen explained. “Through a unique collaboration with the non-profit Bold Futures, their stories and input shaped this film throughout its development and production. As a director, whose own family has been affected by addiction, my intention was to create a film that felt truthful while unraveling in a unique, visually cerebral way. “All the World is Sleeping” is grounded in the axiom that while this is a movie, we understand that these moments are happening all around us. Hopefully it gets the audience talking.”

Along with “All The World Is Sleeping” and “Scream VI,” Barerra has another film on the way this year: the musical “Carmen” with Paul Mescal, in theaters this April. Other recent roles for the actress include the thriller “Bed Rest” and last year’s Netflix limited series “Keep Breathing.”
