It’s time to update our 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2024 list because Amazon Studios has unveiled some of its release dates for next year on Prime Video. Whether some of these films will get theatrical releases is currently unknown, but the rule of thumb is: the bigger the picture and bigger the stars, the more likely it is (usually anyhow, next year may prove to be the exception; see below).

Let’s take a look at what’s coming up. The first project that jumps out is “Roadhouse,” a remake of the Patrick Swayze film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Doug Liman. Amazon says the film will hit Prime Video on Thursday, March 21.
They’ve also supplied a new logline which reads: In this adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the ’80s cult classic, ex-UFC fighter Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems.
The film co-stars Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim De Almeida, and fighter Conor McGregor.
“The Idea Of You” is also a big project we’ve discussed lately. It’s from director Michael Showalter (“The Big Sick” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), stars Anne Hathaway, and is about a divorced mom who falls into an unexpected affair with the biggest boyband star in the world at Coachella (the idea has always been a kind of fictional, “Harry Styles” type).
The film’s big supporting cast stars Nicholas Galitzine (the boy band star), Ella Rubin, Reid Scott and Annie Mumolo, Nina Bloomgarden, Raymond Cham Jr., Mathilda Gianopoulos, Jordan Aaron Hall, Chandler Lovelle, Cheech Manohar, Perry Mattfeld, Meg Millidge
Here’s the official synopsis:
Based on the acclaimed, contemporary love story of the same name, The Idea of You centers on Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. When Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes, and there is an instant, undeniable spark. As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.
Amazon Studios will release the film On Prime Video on Thursday, May 2.
Most of these projects sound like they are doing direct to Prime Video, but one that’s not is an epic Christmas action comedy called “Red One” starring Dwayne “The Rock Johnson” and Chris Evans. Amazon MGM Studios and Seven Bucks Productions (Johnson’s company) set an exclusive global theatrical release for November 15, 2024 (via Deadline)
Rival wide releases coming around that time include Warner Bros.’ Robert De Niro mobster movie, “Alto Knights” and “Lionsgate’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” which likely means “The Red One,” essentially a big winter blockbuster should be able to handle both of them easily.
“Red One” is directed by Johnson’s “Jumanji” director, Jake Kasdan, and its script was penned by “Fast & Furious” and “Hobbs & Shaw” screenwriter Chris Morgan. J.K. Simmons, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Wesley Kimmel co-star.
A bit of an unexpected one, in terms of being done so soon, Nia DaCosta’s “Hedda” starring Tessa Thompson is also set for TBD 2024.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Based on the iconic Henrik Ibsen play, Nia DaCosta’s reimagination of Hedda Gabler tells the story of a housewife (Tessa Thompson) who, in an attempt to win back her female lover, brings ruination on all those close to her on the night of a party she and her husband host in their lavish estate.
Here’s a few more of note.
Peter Farrelly’s new project, “Ricky Stanicky,” starring Zac Efron, Jermaine Fowler, Andrew Santino, Lex Scott Davis, Anja Savcic, and Jeff Ross with William H. Macy and John Cena, arrives on March 7.
For Q3 and Q4 (the late summer and fall), Amazon Studios confirms Mimi Cave’s “Holland, Michigan,” starring Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen, Jude Hill, and Gael García Bernal, is coming next year. Philippe Lacote’s “The Jealousy Man,” starring Shailene Woodley, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Richard Madden, is TBD in 2024 and sounds interesting. And “My Spy: The Eternal City” an espionage comedy starring Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal, Flula Borg, Craig Robinson, Billy Barratt, and Taeho K, with Anna Faris and Ken Jeong, is also coming next year, probably closer to the end of the year.
