Richard Linklater returned to the Croisette for the first in nearly 20 years with his latest film, “Nouvelle Vague,” a love letter to the French New Wave and Jean-Luc Godard‘s “Breathless” in particular. So how did the Cannes crowd greet Linklater’s new film? The Playlist’s review was, well, not kind, but there’s bound to be a handful of moviegoers who will enjoy the film.
“Nouvelle Vague” sees Linklater recreate the 1959 shoot of Godard’s feature debut, with Guillaume Marbeck as the celebrated French auteur and Zoey Deutch as the film’s anti-heroine, Jean Seberg. As for the rest of the cast? A who’s who of French New Wave stars and directors making cameos played by contemporary actor, like Godard’s Cahiers du Cinéma compatriots François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Éric Rohmer, and others
Here’s a brief logline for “Nouvelle Vague,” courtesy of the Cannes Film Festival:
This is the story of Godard making “Breathless,” told in the style and spirit in which Godard made “Breathless.”
