'American Gigolo' Trailer: Jon Bernthal Stars In Showtime's Series Update To Paul Schrader's 1980 Neo-Noir

Can another ‘80s classic reinvent itself? Showtime’s new series “American Gigolo” joins an already crowded list of upcoming remakes. The project attempts a difficult feat, combining the neo-noir flare of Paul Schrader‘s classic 1980 film while also taking its story in new directions. This version features male escort Julian after he’s spent almost two decades in jail for murder. His subsequent freedom after wrongful conviction leaves both himself and a veteran detective searching for answers.

Much of the show’s appeal comes from its two leads. “The Punisher” standout Jon Bernthal stars as the complicated escort turned former convict and marks yet another chance for the actor to show off his talents as a leading man. The versatile actor finds a sense of balance with Rosie O’Donnell as Detective Sunday. Her numerous credits in dramatic projects come in handy in this twisted narrative.

The project is not without its own drama. Schrader openly criticized the forthcoming version of “Gigolo.” Full of praise for its acting talent in a Facebook post, the filmmaker is less than thrilled about his treatment involving the series. Schrader wrote, “Here were my options: (1) take $50G and not be involved (2) take $0 and not be involved (3) threaten an expensive and futile lawsuit and not be involved. I took the $50G. I haven’t seen the trailer.”

Here’s an official synopsis for the series:

American Gigolo is a present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film. Julian Kaye (Jon Bernthal) has always been an object of desire, so much so that people are willing to destroy him in order to have him. Exonerated, after 15 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit, he now faces the challenge of picking up the pieces as the detective who put him behind bars tries to unravel the mystery that led to his wrongful incarceration.

Gretchen Mol, Gabriel LaBelle, Lizzie Brocheré, and Leland Orser also star in “American Gigolo.” The series debuts on Showtime later this year. Get your first look at the series in the trailer below.
