Miles Teller‘s turn as Rooster in “Top Gun: Maverick” won’t be his last as a Navy officer. Deadline reports that the actor will star in Paramount‘s remake of the 1980s hit “An Officer And A Gentleman.” No word on who else will star in the film with Teller, but he’ll have big shoes to fill. That 1982 pic solidified Richard Gere‘s A-list status, and the pic boasts one of the best movie songs ever: “Up Where We Belong,” which won Best Song at the Oscars.
For those who haven’t seen the original, “An Officer And A Gentleman” follows a loner out to graduate from Navy Officer training despite his ultra-tough drill sergeant, finding love with a local townie along the way. Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr. also star in the 1982 film, with Gossett winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. Paramount obviously thinks 42 years is enough time to make this one again, and why shouldn’t they? The embattled studio, whose future remains in flux, needs more assured smash hits, and that’s what the 1982 film undoubtedly was (granted, that was four decades ago).
What else do we know about the “An Officer And A Gentleman” remake? “The Lost City” scribe Dana Fox pens the latest draft of the script, with the original draft done by Matt Johnson. Temple Hill produces the film. As for who will direct? No word on that yet.
Teller adds the remake to an already busy upcoming schedule for the actor. “The Gorge” likely comes next, an Apple event pic Teller co-stars in with Anya Taylor-Joy. Scott Derrickson directs that one, about two elite soldiers on a dangerous mission. Teller also stars in “Michael,” the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, as John Branca, the pop star’s lawyer. Also on the way for Teller: “Eternity,” an A24 rom-com with Elizabeth Olsen.
So is a remake of “An Officer And A Gentleman” a good idea for Paramount? Hey, Teller has crushed playing a Navy man before, so who says he’s not right for Gere’s part here? Stay tuned to see who Teller’s co-stars will be in this one.
