If you’re a fan of ‘90s action films, odds are you’ve experienced Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 mountain-climbing flick “Cliffhanger.” The film features the actor at peak physical condition, with maximum Hollywood clout. He was already Rocky and Rambo. And he was coming off years with films like “Cobra,” “Tango & Cash,” and my personal favorite, “Over the Top,” which is about competitive arm wrestling. But “Cliffhanger” might actually stand as “Peak Stallone” (no pun intended).
Well, producer Neal Moritz knows a goldmine when he sees it. And the man who is one of the folks responsible for turning ripping off ‘90s action film “Point Break” and rebranding it “The Fast and the Furious” is now setting his sights on a “Cliffhanger” remake, but with a female twist.
According to Deadline, Moritz is developing a new version of “Cliffhanger” with “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night” director Ana Lily Amirpour attached. The film is said to also be searching for a female lead to take on the Stallone role. Fair warning to any actresses out there thinking about signing on, you have a lot to live up to, specifically in the biceps department.
Adding more weirdness to the whole project is the fact that the production is in talks with Jason “My Man!” Momoa to make a cameo. (How much you want to bet that he plays a gender-swapped version of the woman in the clip below?)
For those sadly not familiar with “Cliffhanger,” the film follows a mountain climber extraordinaire that finds himself (or herself) as the only means of stopping some criminals in the mountains. You know, using climbing skills and what not.
In another link to Stallone, the script for the remake will be written by Sascha Penn, who is probably best known for work on “Creed II.” Sadly, even with all these ties to the original “Cliffhanger” star, Stallone is not attached to the project in any way.

The film is being sold as a package during this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but it’s clear that this will definitely be one of the hottest projects available.
And for fun, you can watch the aforementioned opening scene from “Cliffhanger” below, as well as “Free Solo” star (and real-life climber) Alex Honnold breaking down the film, as well as other failed attempts to show rock climbing in movies.
