Romanian director Radu Jade‘s “Do Not Expect Too Much From The End Of The World” became a critical darling back after its world premiere at Locarno in 2023, where it won the fest’s Special Jury prize. After screenings at TIFF, NYFF and elsewhere, the film racked up further accolades. Among them? A Best International Feature nod at the 2024 Oscars, a slot on Cahiers du Cinéma 2023’s top 10 list, and further championing by critics and filmmakers after the film hit US theaters last May.

So what does Jude have in store for his narrative feature follow-up? Unsurprisingly, a sharp pivot and what critics at the Berlin Film Festival call a B-side of sorts for the director. An ode to Robert Rosselini‘s masterwork “Europe ’51,” Jude’s “Kontinental ’25” follows a Transylvanian woman faced with a moral dilemma when a man she’s evicting from her building suddenly commits suicide.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Kontinental ’25,” courtesy of the Berlin Film Festival:
Orsolya is a bailiff in Cluj, the main city in Transylvania. One day she must evict a homeless man who lives in the basement of a building. An unexpected event creates a moral crisis she tries to solve as best she can.
“Kontinental ’25” stars Eszter Tompa, Gabriel Spahiu, Adonis Tanța, and Șerban Pavlu.
Jude writes and directs “Kontinental ’25,” as he often does in his films. Producers include Alex Teodorescu and Rodrigo Teixeira. Executive producers include Ramona Grama, Dan Wechsler, Jamal Zeinal-Zade, Andreas Roald, Berta Marchiori, Fernanda Frotté, Paul Thiltges, and Adrien Chef.
