It seemed there for a minute like the long-awaited return of the mighty Jonathan Glazer would win Cannes’ top prize, the coveted Palme d’Or award for his new film, “The Zone Of Interest.” Instead, the prize went to another top Cannes contender, seemingly universally loved by both audiences, critics, and the jury, “Anatomy Of A Fall.” Directed by Justine Triet (“Age Of Panic,” “Sibyl”), the film is a dramatic thriller that has riveted audiences.
Co-written by Triet and Arthur Harari, “Anatomy Of A Fall” stars Sandra Hüller (ironically, also the star of the aforementioned Glazer picture) as a writer trying to prove her innocence in the wake of her husband’s sudden death.
“Anatomy Of A Fall” stars Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado Graner, Antoine Reinartz, Samuel Theis, Jehnny Beth, Saadia Bentaïeb, Camille Rutherford, Anne Rotger, and Sophie Fillières.
Here’s the official synopsis of this Cannes dramatic thriller.
For the past year, Sandra, her husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he was murdered or committed suicide. Samuel’s suspicious death is presumed murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. What follows is not just an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel’s death but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel’s conflicted relationship.
Neon (“Parasite”), quickly picked this one up for North American distribution at Cannes and has now set the film for a New York and Los Angeles theaters debut on October 13, 2023, with expansion coming after that. An Oscar Best Picture nomination seems unlikely (though they did the rare feat of winning it with “Parasite”), but a sure contender for Best International Picture? You bet it is.
