Anna Kendrick Says ‘Pitch Perfect’ Cast Was Told To “Show More Skin”

As the #metoo campaign continues to dismantle and expose sexism, harassment, and assault in Hollywood, it’s important to remember this behavior is entrenched in the system. Change is coming, but it’s likely going to take a long time to truly turn itself around. That fact becomes particularly underlined when you hear that a franchise as innocuous as “Pitch Perfect” has seen executives trying to get its female cast members to reveal more of themselves.

Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar, Anna Kendrick reveals people at the top of the Universal food chain weighed in on what the ensemble was wearing and suggested that….they wear less of it.

“It’s funny – whenever we do the wardrobe fittings I feel like we get notes from the top saying they should be tighter and sexier and show more skin. And I’m like, that’s not why people are coming to see the movie. They definitely aren’t showing up because of our sex appeal,” she said. “It’s nice that audiences are interested in seeing a movie of misfits and girls of different shapes and sizes.”

Kendrick not only believes in the message audiences are embracing from “Pitch Perfect,” but is also heartened by the ongoing conversation around sexism in Hollywood, and is hopeful that the same scrutiny follows into other industries as well.

“I spoke to friends the other day, one who works in tech, and one who works in marketing, and I said, I’m so glad this is happening and I hope it continues to happen in industries that are less visible, that isn’t just Hollywood and politics,” she said. “And that when women report it in any industry, they are believed.”

“Pitch Perfect 3” opens on December 22nd.
