Anne Hathaway Thought Her ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Audition Was For Harley Quinn, Not Catwoman

It wouldn’t be a proper superhero film trilogy if there wasn’t at least some debate over the ending. And for Christopher Nolan’s great ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy, much of the debate seems to focus on the final film, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Regardless of what you feel about the film, it’s hard to deny that Anne Hathaway was able to portray a really great Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. But according to the actress, when she first met for the role, she was completely misinformed about who the character would be.

Speaking to BBC One, Hathaway was asked about a rumor that she initially thought the role that Nolan wanted to speak to her about was for Harley Quinn, not Catwoman. While she doesn’t go into details about how she was so misinformed, Hathaway explains that her “initial meet” with Nolan didn’t go exactly as she planned.

“I came in and I had this lovely Vivian Westwood kind of beautiful but mad-tailoring top with stripes going everywhere,” said Hathaway. “And I wore these flat Joker-ey looking shoes. And I was trying to give Chris these crazy little smiles.”

She continued, “About an hour into the meeting he said, ‘Well, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, but it’s Catwoman.’ And I was like, ‘Shifting into a different gear. Now ok, we’re slinky. We’re slinky. And I hate my shirt. I love my shirt, but I hate it right now. We’re slinky.’”

Obviously, she must not have botched the meeting too badly because she ended up landing the role. However, it does make you wonder what a Christopher Nolan version of Harley Quinn might have looked like, portrayed by Hathaway. She has the comedic chops to pull off the wackiness, for sure. But could she have done anything better than what Margot Robbie has done as the character? Guess we’ll never know.
