Got a Tip?

Anne Hathaway Jumps Into ‘The Lifeboat’

nullThough she’s fresh off an Oscar win for “Les Miserables,” Anne Hathaway has been keeping things surprisingly quiet, not rushing into signing onto a bunch of projects. Other than jumping onto Christopher Nolan‘s “Interstellar” and currently shooting the romantic drama “Song One,” the actress has kept out of the trades for the most part. Until now.

Rest easy, remake worriers, because she isn’t touching the Alfred Hitchcock movie — instead Hathaway will produce and star in “The Lifeboat,” an adaptation of the novel by Charlotte Rogan. Penned by William Broyles Jr. who knows his way around a drama (“Apollo 13,” “Jarhead,” “Flags Of Our Fathers“), the film will tell the story of the newlywed Grace Winter, who stands trial for murder in 1914, and who survives the sinking of the transatlantic ship Empress thanks to a lifeboat. However, with the occupancy stretched to the limit, those on board began discussing who might be left behind…. Here’s the Amazon book synopsis:

Grace Winter, 22, is both a newlywed and a widow. She is also on trial for her life.

In the summer of 1914, the elegant ocean liner carrying Grace and her husband Henry across the Atlantic suffers a mysterious explosion. Setting aside his own safety, Henry secures Grace a place in a lifeboat, which the survivors quickly realize has exceeded capacity. For any to live, some must die.

As the castaways battle the elements and each other, Grace recollects the unorthodox way she and Henry met, and the new life of privilege she thought she’d found. Will she pay any price to keep it?

Sounds like a turn toward something dark for Hathaway, and it’s promising, but we’ll wait to see who comes on board to direct. And while this percolates, once the actress is done with “Song One,” she’ll shoot “Interstellar” this fall. [THR]
