Got a Tip?

Anne Hathaway To Step Into Garland’s Ruby Slippers

Anne Hathaway has officially been attached to star in a film and stage adaptation of Gerald Clarke’s “Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland”. The successful biography retells the life of the “Wizard of Oz” star detailing all the “highs that made history and lows that finally brought down the curtain.”

After her auspicious musical stints at this year’s Oscars and on SNL, it is assumed Hathaway will be utilizing her own vocals for the role – which will be a first for her. The stage adaptation, however, won’t be the first time Hathaway has appeared on stage. She is scheduled to debut in a production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night later this year.

In a statement, Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Company is behind the project, revealed, “We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role.”

Further he describes the biography as “a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland’s life and is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings. Her story is incredible subject matter for both theatre and film and we look forward to bringing it to audiences.” But as Hollywood Elsewhere wisely notes, she is “attached” — i.e., “interested but unsigned” so far.

Hathaway will next be seen as the White Queen in Tim Burton’s “Alice In Wonderland” due out March 19, 2010.
