Damn, this is just plain wrong. Penguin has announced that a new “Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” novel is being penned by Eoin Colfer, best known for the novel, “Artemis Fowl.”
This is wrong on many levels. For one the heralded sci-fi comedy’s original author Douglas Adams died of a heart attack at age 49, in May of 2001. So heresy. Plus in the fifth book of Adams’ ever-increasing trilogy, “Mostly Harmless,” all the characters in the novel were unsentimentally obliterated at the end (we think he just wanted the damn thing over already).
A ‘Hitchhiker’s’ movie was made a few years ago, by the video directors Hammer & Tongs (they directed, “Son of Rambow”), but let’s face it. It wasn’t great.
The new author says even he was opposed to the idea at first. “My first reaction was semi-outrage that anyone should be allowed to tamper with this incredible series. But on reflection I realised that this is a wonderful opportunity to work with characters I have loved since childhood and give them something of my own voice while holding on to the spirit of Douglas Adams.”
We’re not convinced and call bullshit (let’s face it, even “Mostly Harmless” wasn’t that good at the time).
