Got a Tip?

Ansel Elgort To Star In WarnerMedia Streaming Series ‘Tokyo Vice’ From ‘Shang-Chi’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton

Sure, Ansel Elgort started his career with YA films like “The Fault in Our Stars” and the “Divergent” series. But lately, the actor has been making some very interesting acting choices, appearing in the film “Baby Driver” (which earned him a Golden Globe nom), as well as the upcoming “Goldfinch” and Steven Spielberg’sWest Side Story.” And judging by this latest bit of news, Elgort has lined himself up a pretty interesting TV series for good measure, titled “Tokyo Vice.”

THR is reporting that Elgort has signed on to star in the lead role in the upcoming series “Tokyo Vice,” which will have a 10-episode season debuting on WarnerMedia’s future streaming service (that still hasn’t been formally announced). Perhaps best of all, the series is set to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who is best known for his film “Short Term 12” and recently, signed on to direct Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi.”

“Tokyo Vice” is based on the memoir of the same name from author Jake Adelstein and tells the true story of Adelstein’s career as the first non-Japanese reporter to begin working at a major Japanese newspaper. As you might guess, Elgort is slated to play the role of Adelstein in the series, where he’ll embed himself with the local Tokyo police squad for a story.

As mentioned, Elgort is currently in production on Spielberg’s upcoming musical remake of “West Side Story,” and it’s assumed he will work on this after. Cretton is developing “Shang-Chi,” at the moment, but since Marvel Studios has yet to announce the film, we don’t know when the superhero film will arrive in theaters, and thus, it stands to reason that the director will work on “Tokyo Vice” before stepping into the MCU.
