Despite the popularity and high quality of Misha Green’s series adaptation of the Matt Ruff novel, it wasn’t enough to save genre mash-up “Lovecraft Country” from being canceled by HBO, and the news officially hit last week. The end of the show wasn’t mutual, as the showrunner took to Twitter to post her ideas for a Season 2 that didn’t get picked by the cable network. Giving the impression that she was fully prepared to move on with more seasons, but that won’t be happening at HBO.
Green luckily has been keeping busy during the show’s hiatus with MGM Studios (being acquired by Amazon for $8.45 billion) hiring her to write and direct Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”) in a “Tomb Raider” sequel. Green taking the directing reigns from British filmmaker Ben Wheatley (“Free Fire,” “High-Rise“), who had been originally attached to helm the video game project before pivoting to the Jason Statham shark film “The Meg 2.”
WarnerMedia‘s competition didn’t take long to scoop up the talented writer/showrunner/filmmaker, as Deadline reports that AppleTV+ has signed a lucrative overall and multi-year deal with Misha Green.
This deal will allow Green to develop original films and television series for the newish streaming service, which certainly hasn’t made the same international impact as Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video. Adding folks with unique ideas will hopefully improve their subscriber count and bring us appealing original programming beyond things like the upcoming high-budgeted sci-fi series “Foundation.”
In 2017, Misha Green was hired by Warner Bros. to help write a remake of the cult classic 1973 blaxploitation film “Cleopatra Jones,” that originally starred Tamara Dobson. However, it remains to be seen if she’ll continue working on that project as she’ll be busy with “Tomb Raider 2,” and this new deal at Apple could also become a priority.
