There’s been rumblings the past few years that Apple would make a sequel “Greyhound,” their 2020 film with Tom Hanks. But now there’s official word that the follow-up is moving forward, and shooting on the project begins next January. Deadline has the scoop.

Hanks returns in the still-untitled sequel as Captain Krause as the USS Keeling participates in the Normandy invasion and the Pacific Theater. Hanks also pens the script for the film, which sees Aaron Schneider return to direct. Also returning? Producer Gary Goetzman via his Playtone banner.
But talks are still ongoing for key cast members of the 2020 film to reprise their respective roles. The most important names there are Stephen Graham, Elisabeth Shue, and Rob Morgan, but it’s likely all three will return.
Based on the 1955 novel “The Good Shepherd,” “Greyhound” follows Hanks as an inexperienced U.S. Navy commander who must lead an Allied convoy against a German submarine wolf pack. Sony originally had the movie in line for a June 2020 theatrical release, but the COVID-19 pandemic nixed those plans. Apple eventually bought the distribution rights from Sony and released the film on Apple TV+ on July 10, 2020. Critics liked the film for its battle sequences and brief runtime, and “Greyhound” went on to receive a single Oscar nod for Best Sound.
As for a release date for the “Greyhound” sequel? Let’s call it sometime in 2027 to be safe.
