In terms of legendary figures in Hollywood history, it’s difficult to think of many people more iconic than Cary Grant. So, it makes complete sense that a studio would be ready to bring the story of Grant’s life to screens around the world. And that’s exactly what’s happening.
According to Deadline, ITV and BritBox International are developing a new drama series based on the life of Cary Grant with Jason Isaacs signed on to lead the cast. The series, titled “Archie,” tells the life story of Grant, born Archibald Alexander Leach, from his childhood all the way through his legendary career as an Oscar-nominated actor. “Archie” comes from writer-producer Jeff Pope, who previously worked on projects such as “Philomena” and “Stan & Ollie.”
“There was only one Cary Grant and I’d never be foolish enough to try to step into his iconic shoes,” said Isaacs. “Archie Leach, on the other hand, couldn’t be further from the character he invented to save himself.”
Pope added, “Cary Grant became one of the most iconic figures of the twentieth century, beloved by presidents and paupers. The key to everything lay in his childhood.”
Isaacs has been a fixture in films and TV series since the ‘90s. Most recently, he has appeared in the TV series, “Good Sam,” as well as films such as “Operation Mincemeat” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” He’ll next be seen in the highly-anticipated series, “The Crowded Room.”
And if you’re concerned about what Cary Grant’s family thinks of the new series, both Grant’s daughter Jennifer Grant and former wife Dyan Cannon have given the series their blessing, describing the script as “intelligent, understanding” and “capturing him so brilliantly.”
A release date for the new show has yet to be announced.
