'Archive 81' Trailer: Netflix's Latest Thriller Finds Something Creepy On Old VHS Tapes

What if you combined the found-footage aspect of the “V/H/S” franchise with the creepy, supernatural aspects of “The Ring?” Basically, that’s the elevator pitch of Netflix’s new thriller series, “Archive 81.”

As seen in the trailer for “Archive 81,” the series follows the story of an archivist who is given the job of trying to salvage some burned VHS tapes, which may or may not have some secret information on them. Little does the archivist know, those tapes could help uncover more than just secrets, as he starts to realize there could be something supernatural occurring. 

The new series stars Mamoudou Athie, Dina Shihabi, Martin Donovan, Matt McGorry, Julia Chan, Evan Jonigkeit, and Ariana Neal. “Archive 81” is executive produced and showrun by Rebecca Sonnenshine. The series features a team of incredible directors such as Rebecca Thomas, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, and Haifaa Al Mansour.

Here’s the synopsis:

Archive 81 follows archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), who takes a job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994. Reconstructing the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), he is drawn into her investigation of a dangerous cult at the Visser apartment building. As the season unfolds across these two timelines, Dan slowly finds himself obsessed with uncovering what happened to Melody. When the two characters form a mysterious connection, Dan becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.
